How Wheel Alignment Saves You Fuel

The Hidden Cost of Misaligned Wheels

Most South African drivers don't think about wheel alignment until they notice their car pulling to one side. But here's the truth: misaligned wheels are quietly costing you money every time you fill up at the petrol station.

When your wheels are out of alignment, they're fighting each other. That resistance requires more fuel to overcome. Research shows poor alignment can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 7% — on a tank of R1,500, that's R105 wasted every single tank.

What Causes Misalignment?

  • Potholes — the biggest culprit on Vaal roads. One sharp impact can knock alignment completely out.
  • Kerb strikes — parking against a pavement at speed shifts the front wheels.
  • Speed bumps — hitting them too fast, especially loaded taxis and SUVs.
  • Worn suspension — worn ball joints and tie rod ends allow alignment to drift gradually.

How Alignment Affects Your Tyres

Misaligned wheels cause your tyres to scrub against the road at a slight angle instead of rolling cleanly. This causes feathering, one-sided wear, and cupping. A set of tyres that should last 50,000km can be worn down in 20,000km if alignment is ignored.

A R350 alignment today can save you R3,000 in tyres next year. That is a return most investments cannot match.

Signs You Need an Alignment Right Now

  • Car pulls left or right when you let go of the wheel
  • Steering wheel is off-centre on a straight road
  • Tyres show uneven or rapid wear on one edge
  • You recently hit a serious pothole or kerb
  • Steering feels loose or imprecise

What to Expect at MMAGHA

At MMAGHA Auto Mags, Rims & Tyres on Leslie Street, Vereeniging, we use computerised equipment measuring all four wheels simultaneously. Our technicians show you the before and after readings so you see exactly what was corrected. The process takes 30–45 minutes, includes a test drive, and starts from R350. No guesswork — numbers on a screen, adjusted to manufacturer specification every time.

When Should You Replace Your Tyres?

The Tyre You Ignore Today Could Kill You Tomorrow

Tyres are the only part of your car that touches the road. Yet most South African drivers ignore them until something catastrophic happens — a blowout on the N1, a skid on a wet road, a tyre that simply cannot stop the car in time.

1. Tread Depth — The Most Critical Indicator

New tyres typically have 7–9mm of tread. South African law requires a minimum of 1mm, but safety experts recommend replacing before 3mm — and at 2mm in wet season.

The R2 Coin Test

Insert a R2 coin into your tyre's main groove. If you can see the silver band at the edge of the coin, your tread is below 3mm. Replace immediately.

A tyre with 1.6mm tread needs 3x the stopping distance on a wet road compared to a new tyre. That is the difference between stopping safely and a collision.

2. Age — Tyres Expire Even If They Look Fine

Rubber degrades through oxidation even when not used. Maximum safe age: 5 years in regular use, 7 years absolute maximum regardless of tread depth. Check the DOT code on the sidewall — the last 4 digits show the week and year of manufacture. For example, 2419 means week 24 of 2019.

3. Sidewall Cracks and Dry Rot

Inspect your sidewalls for hairline cracks, dry rot (grey or whitish appearance with surface cracking), or deep cracking. Cracks indicate the rubber has lost elasticity and can fail without warning at highway speed.

4. Bulges and Blisters

A bulge on your tyre's sidewall is a tyre emergency — the internal structure has already failed. Do not drive the vehicle. Replace the tyre before moving it. This is not an overreaction; it is physics.

How to Spot Unsafe Tyres

The 60-Second Walk-Around That Could Save Your Life

Before any long trip — or even your daily commute through Vereeniging — taking 60 seconds to inspect your tyres can be the difference between arriving safely and ending up stranded or worse.

Step 1: Look at the Tread (10 seconds)

  • Depth — can you see the wear indicator bars flush with the tread? Replace immediately.
  • Even wear — tread wearing unevenly across the width indicates alignment or inflation problems.
  • Feathering — one edge sharper than the other when you run your hand across? Alignment issue.
  • One-sided edge wear — heavy wear on one edge only usually means incorrect camber angle.
  • Cupping or scalloping — dips around the tread indicate worn shock absorbers.

Step 2: Inspect the Sidewalls (15 seconds)

  • Bulges or blisters — any protrusion from the sidewall is a tyre emergency. Do not drive. Replace immediately.
  • Cracks — fine cracks indicate age and UV damage. Widespread or deep cracking means replacement.
  • Cuts or gashes — if you can see cords or wires through a cut, the tyre is unsafe.
  • Impact marks — a slightly raised round mark can indicate internal damage from a pothole.
A sidewall bulge is not a warning — it is a failure notification. The tyre has already failed internally. You are driving on borrowed time.

Danger Signs That Mean Stop Now

  • Any visible sidewall bulge
  • Visible cords or steel belts through the rubber
  • Tread completely worn to indicators
  • A tyre that repeatedly loses pressure overnight

Bring your vehicle to MMAGHA at No 1A Leslie Street — we inspect tyres at no charge and give you an honest assessment. No upselling, just straight talk about what is safe and what is not.

Why Wheel Balancing Matters

That Shake Is Not Just Annoying — It Is Expensive

You are cruising at 100km/h and the steering wheel develops that familiar shimmy. You grip it tighter and assume it is just the road. But it is not — it is unbalanced wheels, and every kilometre you drive like that is costing you money and wearing out your tyres faster than necessary.

What Is Wheel Balancing?

Every tyre and rim has slight weight variations from manufacturing. When a wheel is out of balance, the heavier spot creates a centrifugal force that causes the wheel to wobble at certain speeds. Balancing involves adding small weights to the rim at precise locations to counteract the heavy spot — resulting in a wheel that spins with no imbalance at any speed.

What Unbalanced Wheels Do to Your Car

An unbalanced tyre at 100km/h impacts the road approximately 800 times per minute — hammering your tyres, suspension and wheel bearings with every single rotation.
  • Tyre wear — causes flat spots and scalloping. A tyre lasting 50,000km may wear out in 30,000km.
  • Suspension damage — accelerates wear on shocks, struts, ball joints and tie rod ends worth thousands to replace.
  • Wheel bearing damage — R2,000–R4,000 per corner to replace.
  • Driver fatigue — constant vibration reduces concentration and reaction time on long trips.

When to Balance Your Wheels

  • Every new tyre fitment — always, without exception
  • Every 10,000–15,000km as a general service interval
  • After any pothole impact that caused a noticeable jolt
  • After puncture repair — the patch changes weight distribution
  • Whenever you feel vibration through the steering wheel or floor

Balancing vs Alignment — Know the Difference

Balancing corrects weight distribution of the tyre and rim assembly — it stops vibration. Alignment corrects the angles at which your tyres contact the road — it stops pulling and uneven wear. Both are essential but neither replaces the other. At MMAGHA on Leslie Street, wheel balancing starts from R60 per wheel. Most jobs done while you wait.

How to Keep Your Mags Looking New

You Spent Good Money on Those Mags — Protect Them

New mags transform the look of your car. But they are also one of the quickest things to look tired and neglected if you do not care for them properly. The good news: keeping your mags looking new does not require expensive products or hours of work — just knowing what damages them and what protects them.

The 3 Biggest Enemies of Mag Finish

1. Brake Dust

Brake dust is the number one mag killer. Every time you press the brake pedal, your brake pads shed hot, acidic metallic particles that embed into the wheel finish within minutes. Left overnight, brake dust begins to chemically bond with the surface — causing pitting and staining that is nearly impossible to remove without professional polishing.

Fix: Clean your wheels every one to two weeks before the dust has time to bond. Do not wait.

2. Curb Rash

When the outer coating of a mag is broken, moisture gets into the aluminium underneath and causes corrosion. What starts as a small scuff becomes a spreading patch of oxidation that eventually requires full refurbishment.

Fix: Get curb rash repaired early. At MMAGHA we repair most curb rash damage from R250 per wheel, matching your original finish.

3. Wrong Cleaning Products

Harsh household cleaners and acid-based wheel cleaners strip the clear coat from painted mags and cloud chrome finishes. Fix: Use only a pH-neutral wheel cleaner specifically formulated for alloy wheels.

The Right Cleaning Method

  1. Let wheels cool — never spray water on hot wheels directly after driving
  2. Rinse first to remove loose brake dust before applying any product
  3. Apply pH-neutral wheel cleaner, let it dwell 30–60 seconds
  4. Agitate with a soft wheel brush — get into spokes and around lug nuts
  5. Rinse thoroughly, dry completely with a clean microfibre towel

Protection — The Step Most People Skip

Apply a wheel sealant or ceramic coating after cleaning. These create a barrier that brake dust cannot stick to as easily, making future cleaning dramatically faster. Reapply sealant every 3 months. The Right Tyre Pressure (And Why It Matters)

Safety 4 min read
The Right Tyre Pressure (And Why It Matters)

The Number on the Tyre Sidewall Is NOT Your Target Pressure

This is the most common tyre pressure mistake South African drivers make. That number moulded into the sidewall — often 44, 51 or 74 PSI — is the maximum cold inflation pressure the tyre is designed to safely contain. It is not the pressure your vehicle should run at. Your vehicle's recommended pressure is set by the manufacturer and is almost always significantly lower.

Where to Find Your Correct Tyre Pressure

  • Door sticker — inside the driver's door frame. The most reliable source. Shows front and rear pressures, often different for standard and full load.
  • Owner's manual — tyre specification page with recommended pressures for all tyre sizes.
  • Not the internet — unless sourced from official manufacturer documentation for your exact vehicle, year, and trim level.
Typical recommended pressures: small passenger car 30–35 PSI, mid-size sedan 32–36 PSI, SUV or 4x4 35–42 PSI, taxi or minibus 55–65 PSI. Always confirm your specific vehicle spec.

The Consequences of Under-Inflation

  • Blowout risk — excessive heat from sidewall flexing causes catastrophic tyre failure
  • Edge wear — both tyre edges wear rapidly while the centre appears fine
  • Fuel consumption — a 10 PSI deficit increases fuel consumption by 2–3% every kilometre
  • Rim damage — severely under-inflated tyres can roll off the rim in corners

The Consequences of Over-Inflation

  • Centre wear — only the centre tread wears; edges look new but grip is reduced
  • Reduced grip — smaller contact patch reduces braking and cornering traction
  • Harsher ride — every pothole transmitted directly into the cabin and suspension components
  • Increased pothole vulnerability — the rigid tyre cannot absorb impact, sending all force into the rim

How to Check Correctly

  1. Check cold — at least 3 hours after the car was last driven
  2. Use a quality gauge — fuel station gauges are often inaccurate from years of use
  3. Check all four tyres and the spare
  4. Check monthly minimum, or before every long trip

If your TPMS warning light comes on, inflate immediately and visit MMAGHA to have the system inspected and recalibrated after any tyre service.

Upgrading Your Rim Size — The Right Way

Tips 6 min read
Upgrading Your Rim Size — The Right Way

Bigger Rims Look Amazing — But There Are Rules

Upgrading your rim size is one of the most impactful visual modifications you can make to any car. Done correctly, it also improves steering response and cornering feel. Done incorrectly, it destroys ride comfort, ruins fuel economy, confuses your speedometer, and can void your insurance.

Understanding Plus-Sizing

Plus-sizing means increasing the rim diameter while reducing the tyre sidewall height to keep the overall rolling diameter the same as the original fitment. If rolling diameter changes significantly, your speedometer, ABS calibration and traction control are all affected.

  • Plus One — rim 1 inch larger, proportionally lower profile tyre, same overall diameter
  • Plus Two — rim 2 inches larger, significantly lower profile tyre, same overall diameter
The golden rule: the overall tyre diameter must remain within 3% of the original fitment to maintain speedometer accuracy and proper ABS function.

What Happens to Ride Quality

  • 55 or 65 series tyres — comfortable ride, good pothole absorption. Standard on most family cars.
  • 45 series tyres — noticeably firmer, more responsive steering. Acceptable for daily use.
  • 35 series tyres — very firm, every imperfection transmitted. High rim damage risk on SA roads.

For daily driving in Vereeniging and the Vaal, we recommend not going below a 45-series tyre unless you are prepared for frequent rim damage and a significantly harsher ride.

You Also Need to Match

  • Bolt pattern (PCD) — must match exactly. Common: 4x100, 5x100, 5x114.3, 5x120, 6x139.7
  • Centre bore — the centre hole must match your hub diameter or you need hub-centric rings
  • Offset (ET value) — keep within ±5mm of original spec to avoid tyres rubbing on suspension or wheel arch

Speedometer and ABS Calibration

If your rolling diameter changes, your speedometer reads incorrectly. A 3% larger diameter means your speedometer shows 100km/h when you are actually doing 103km/h. This affects speed camera readings, ABS thresholds, traction control and odometer accuracy for service intervals.

How MMAGHA Handles Rim Upgrades

At MMAGHA on Leslie Street, Vereeniging, we help you find the correct plus-size fitment before you purchase anything. We check bolt pattern, offset, centre bore and calculate the correct tyre size to maintain rolling diameter. Bring your vehicle in or WhatsApp us your tyre size and vehicle details — we will find the right upgrade for your ride and your budget.
